An Evaluation of the Implementation of Communal Conservancies in Namibia

Abstract

The protection of endangered wildlife, such as lions, elephants and zebras, is an urgent issue in the African country of Namibia. While communal conservancies were established to promote sustainable natural resource management, what unintended impacts are these hunting and tourism activities having on the local community?

Yiu Pui Ying, Joanne is a second-year student in The Hong Kong Polytechnic University’s Tourism and Events Management programme. From South Africa, she has a keen interest in travel, phone photography, and outdoor activities such as hiking and kayaking. She is active in PolyU’s leadership and international student clubs, and enjoys keeping a reflective journal to capture her various experiences.

REFLECTION

Growing up in South Africa, I have always held an interest in wildlife, while studying in ELC-1014, Advanced English for University Studies, allowed me to select an original and unique topic. With this in mind, I began researching issues related to wildlife and came across the discussions of communal conservancies, an unfamiliar issue to me. A challenge when writing the essay was finding credible and updated sources to support my arguments for this specific topic. Together with Inscribe, I was able to appreciate my own ideas, whilst learning how to edit my work to become more coherent and concise.
