Abstract
This essay compares the paintings of two great Chinese artists, Bada Shanren and Shitao. Several pieces of artwork are analyzed as the author posits the context of the paintings. He discusses the distinct life experiences and attitudes of the two artists, which are reflected in their contrasting artistic styles.

BIO
Liu Hong is a year four student from the Department of Applied Biology & Chemical Technology at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He has a deep appreciation for Chinese painting and philosophy; his favorite artists are Shitao and Huang Gongwang.
REFLECTION
This essay was written for the course GEC1C20 Chinese Art and Design, which explores a wide range of topics including painting, ceramics, calligraphy, bronzeware and others.
