Coherence in a Text on Palmistry

Introduction:
This task is for you to practise using coherence markers to re-organise a text into the right order.

Tips:
To help you, look for the following:

  • definitions, which are usually near the start of the text
  • paragraphs that give an overview of upcoming information
  • topic sentences, followed by sentences giving supporting information
  • ordering words; e.g. next, Finally
  • related vocabulary; e.g. heart and love

Instructions:
Match the items in the boxes on the left with the items on the right:

  1. Click in the table cell containing the item you want to move.
  2. Click in the table cell where you want the item to go. The words will swap position.
  3. If an item is in the right position, it will have a green background and a tick.
  4. When all the table cells are green and have ticks, you have finished.

       Score: / 10

Target Items to move
1   Palmistry consists of the practice of evaluating a person's character or future life by reading the palm of that person's hand.
2   It starts at one end of the palm and ends about at the ring finger on most people.
3   Finally, the life line, which extends from one end of the palm to the wrist.
4   This line represents the person's vitality and vigor.
5   This line represents what the person believes about love, their past love experiences, and what fears the person has about love.
6   The next line down is the head line.
7   This line represents the person's mind, and indicates whether or not he or she values intelligence and knowledge.
8   In palmistry, the reader usually begins by reading the person's dominant hand, which is the hand he or she uses the most.
9   There are three main lines: the heart line, the head line, and the life line.
10   The heart line is the top line.
