Answers:

  1. The diary has 7 activities, including watching a movie. How can I do all this in 6 hours?
You can't, and we don't expect you to. Choose some of the activities, in any order, and work on those. You do not have to do all of them.

  2. I'm a part-time student. I don't have time to go to the CILL for 6 hours. What should I do?
Your EAP teacher will give you guidelines. In addition, here is some advice:

  3.   You can do all of the activities, and fill in the diary, outside the CILL:
    • Watch an English movie - you can do this at home. Click here to find out more about learning English through films and movies.
    • Read a newspaper, magazine or journal article - you can do this at home or on the bus etc.
    • Write an essay, or part of an essay - you can do the writing outside the CILL, and just bring it to the CILL teacher for comments
    • Speak in a seminar or presentation practice - you can do this with your classmates at any time and in any place that it is convenient for you to get together. To prepare, you can use some of the CILL online materials for EAP
    • Grammar Exercises - you can do a diagnostic test and grammar exercises online
    • Vocabulary Exercises - you can do these online
    • Pronunciation - you can study this online, but we don't have an online test

    • For CILL teachers' comments in your diary, you can drop it off in A305 and collect it later, or drop in to see the CILL teacher at the Help Desk. Here are the CILL opening hours.

  4. I like watching movies. Can I spend all 6 hours watching them? Can I watch movies for both Activity 1 and Activity 8?
No. After you finish the 6 hours and get another CILL diary you can watch more movies. One of the aims of the CILL EAP diary is to broaden your experience of learning a variety of language skills independently, so you need to do more than watch movies. Please also remember that CILL is not a cinema, it is for learning English. Click here to find out more about learning English through films and movies.

  5. How do I know how many hours I have completed in the CILL?
Every time you enter and exit the CILL you should swipe your student ID card on the Smartcard reader. Our computer will use this information to automatically record how much time you have spend. You can check this by using the special card reader attached to the computer on the blue table between reception and the big plasma T.V., as shown in the picture on the right.

  6. I've lost my CILL EAP Diary. Where can I get a new one?
Click here to download a new CILL EAP Diary in Microsoft Word format.

  7. Can I book a room in CILL to watch a movie?
No need. Just find an empty room and go in.

  8. Do I need to ask before using a video or DVD?
No, just take them off the shelf and use them. When you finish, put them back in the same place that you found them.

  9. The computers in CILL are very busy. Can I book a computer?
Sorry, no. If you have a laptop you can use our network connections. Please ask at reception.
