Links to on-line comparisons

Here are some links to on;line comparisons that you can use as a basis for your homework:

Be careful!!! Remember that magazines written by a computer company to promote their products usually will not do a lot of critical analysis of their own products. Try to get independent reviews.

Organisation of a Comparison

  • Title
  • Introduction containing the names and version numbers of the products you are going to compare, and why these products are important for your readers
  • Comparison of the features of the products (if some of the features are the same, either don't write about them, or write about them very very briefly)
  • Conclusions and Recommendations
  • References to the magazines, books etc. where you found your information.

Example phrases:

  • Byte for byte, Fast-ATA drives are much less expensive than SCSI drives, and they’re just as fast or faster; again, at least for most common uses.
  • Drives capable of 7,200 rpm are on the bleeding edges, those capable of 10,000 rpm are on the other side.
  • IBM's Deskstar line of Fast-ATA drives are the fastest Fast-ATA drives you can buy; if you're looking for a SCSI drive, Seagate's new Cheetah drives are the champs.
  • 56k modems are generally only slightly more expensive than their 33.6-kbps counterparts.
  • As an inexpensive alternative, the $119 ActionTec 56K Internal Fax/Modem provides remarkable x2 performance over good line conditions, though it doesn't perform nearly as well as the V.Everything over bad digital or analog lines.
  • This compact external modem proved to be a top performer in our tests, coming in only slightly behind the Courier V.Everything over good line conditions.
