Parker (1994: 4) comments on the isolation felt by teachers of specialisms, and one example of such a specialism could be independent language learning. Independent language learning specialists are few in number compared to classroom specialists, and are geographically widely spread out. Independent Language Learning Internet sites allow such specialists to keep in touch by providing e-mail addresses, lists of links and discussion groups, and disseminating new ideas such as the forthcoming inter-university plan for a Virtual Language Learning Centre.
