The object of the game is to improve your formal writing style by learning how to ‘hedge’ your statements i.e. to avoid strong (assertive) tone.
Some typical examples of strong tone are phrases such as: ‘always’, ‘everybody’, and ‘as we all know that’. These phrases are too strong (assertive) for academic writing and should be replaced with more tentative wording. You need to replace them with phrases such as ‘frequently’, ‘some people’, and ‘there is evidence that’. The game provides an opportunity to work through such vocabulary. A downloadable reference sheet is available on completion of the game.
