ELC MOOCs


MOOC stands for Massive Online Open Course. It is Massive as an unlimited number of participants can take the course. It is Online - users can access it anywhere and anytime as long as they have an Internet connection. It is Open as anyone can take the course; participants do not need to be a student in the PolyU. It is a Course, often based upon an existing university level subject.

Where are the courses?


edXedX is a MOOC provider that offers free online courses and classes. The PolyU is using edX to host its MOOCs. You can find out more about the PolyU on edX here.


edXKEEP stands for Knowledge & Education Exchange Platform. It is hosted by the Chinese University in Hong Kong and is another provider which the PolyU is using to host its MOOCs.

What are the ELC’s MOOCs?


The ELC has created a MOOC called English@Work in Asia.

The ELC is also creating a range of other courses.

What are they about?

English@Work in Asia is divided into two parts: Part 1 of the course gets YOUR foot in the door! It covers the importance of leadership and creativity, writing, formatting and customising effective CVs and job application letters, and the importance of an online presence in job applications. Part 2 helps YOU ace that interview! It analyses what candidates should do before a job interview, how candidates should interact professionally and persuasively during a job interview, and what candidates should do post-interview. You also learn about online interviews in this part of the course.

Read to Know is all about reading. Read more! Improve your reading skills. Know more! This course has activities on 20 English books ranging from 59 Seconds to Animal Farm, plus extra activities about Read@PolyU. Join the course and increase YOUR knowledge.

Academic Skills for Independent Learners (ASIL) is for YOU to self-study, practise and improve the academic English that YOU need for your university studies. Learn about appropriate academic style, correct referencing conventions, writing university levels essays and reports, and delivering academic presentations.

Learning4Life is an online independent self-learning course. Log-on, laugh, like, learn! Improve YOUR language skills, find out about effective study skills and have a healthy study-life balance!

Service Learning is a fusion of face-to-face and online learning experience developed for the subject ELC2S02 Serving the Community through Teaching English. This blended learning initiative provides flexible and engaging online lectures followed up by in-class discussions and practice.

Upgrading Your Grammar is a course designed to help YOU improve the grammar that you need to successfully complete your university studies. Combining short, informative videos with fun, interactive activities, this online course will help you master the language skills you need to succeed.
