| Grammar |
In this course, using a task-based approach, course participants and the teacher will discuss both rules and usage of four areas of grammar that are important for the Hong Kong speakers of English and often cause problems. They will engage in various activities to consolidate the grammatical rules and exceptions to rules. By the end of the course, students will have been introduced to:
- The use of clauses in building complex sentences;
- The use of gerunds, infinitives and the participles;
- Nouns, articles and their uses; and
- Prepositions
Participants will also do an end of course quiz to see if they have been able to make progress in the areas they were taught.
Handouts will be provided.

| Practical Pronunciation |
This course consists of three modules which mainly deal with speaking fluently. The aims of the course are to give learners some useful and practical advice on pronunciation and to provide them with skills that are needed for fluency in speaking. Course participants will learn through active participation in speaking activities, discussion with the teacher about ways to improve their speaking, and practice in the language lab to enhance their pronunciation skills.
At the end of the course, participants are expected to be able to:
- distinguish differences between the English and Chinese sound systems;
- deliver an audience-oriented and focused speech confidently;
- use rhythm and phrasing more effectively and appropriately; and
- employ sentence stress and intonation techniques in speech.
|
| Vocabulary Development |
The course will focus on the following areas:
- problems students encounter with vocabulary;
- factors to take into consideration when developing vocabulary;
- recording strategies;
- dictionary skills;
- collocations; and
- using a concordancer.
The course aims to encourage students to develop independent skills and strategies which will enable them to expand their vocabulary to a more sophisticated level. Vocabulary will be looked at in isolation, in groups and within texts and students will aim to select relevant, useful words which they can record in a variety of ways and later recycle effectively.
