Concordancer Exercises

Mini-Research Question 8:

What things ‘arise’?

First go to http://vlc.polyu.edu.hk/ and find the "Web Concordancer" in the middle of the page.

Type in the word "arise" in the "Keyword" box. Don’t worry about the first box , which is set at "equal to" , just now. After you’ve typed in "arise" hit the "Go" icon.

1. Look at the nouns and noun phrases before ‘arise’? Note them down here.

2. Which of these are positive nouns, which are negative nouns, which are neutral?

Remember to look out for the answers which will be given in Exercise 9.

2. yet (conjunction) to introduce a statement that is surprising after what you have just said: "It's only a little shop and yet it always has such lovely decorations."

Note that this use of ‘yet’ is often combined with ‘and’. Go back to the Web Concordancer and search for ‘and yet’.
