Approximating Dissatisfaction

Introduction:
This task is for you to practise matching data about dissatisfaction with approximations of these figures. This is useful for describing Findings in reports.

Note that because you are describing dissatisfaction, the tone of the phrases should be negative. You can show this negative tone by:

  • using negatives such as 'not satisfied with' and 'dissatisfied with'
  • using comparatives that show low levels of satisfaction; e.g. 'less than a third of staff ' and 'under half of the staff '
  • using negative-sounding phrases such as 'a minority of staff ' (= less than 50%),  'a very small number of staff ', 'just a third of the staff ' and 'only a quarter of the staff '.

The following table shows how to describe the same data as satisfactory, neutral and dissatisfactory. Notice how satisfactory phrases hide exact descriptions of low percentages.

Data Satisfactory Neutral Dissatisfactory

10 - 24 % A considerable number of staff were satisfied with... About one-fifth of the staff were satisfied with ... Over three-quarters of the staff were dissatisfied with...
25 - 32 % Over a quarter of staff were satisfied with... About 30% of staff were satisfied with... Less than a third of staff were satisfied with...
33 - 40% More than a third of staff were satisfied with... About two-fifths of staff were satisfied with... Less than two-fifths of the staff were satisfied with...
41 - 49 % Nearly half of the staff were satisfied with... Just under half of the staff were satisfied with... Under half of the staff were satisfied with...
50 - 54% Over half of the staff were satisfied with... Around half of the staff were satisfied with... Only half of the staff were satisfied with...
55 - 62% Nearly two-thirds of staff were satisfied with... Around 60% of staff were satisfied with... More than a third of the staff were dissatisfied with...
63 - 70% Over 60% of staff were satisfied with... About two-thirds of staff were satisfied with... About a third of the staff were not satisfied with...
71 - 79% Over 70% of staff were satisfied with... About three-quarters of staff were satisfied with... More than a fifth of staff were dissatisfied with...
