Supplementary
English Programme
The English Language Centre offers a Supplementary English
Programme primarily for 1st year higher-diploma and degree students who have been
identified as requiring additional English language tuition. These 22-hour programmes
are offered in both semesters of the academic year. Students usually attend in
groups of five.
Intake
In semester one, students join this programme
following an analysis of their HKALE (A Level) and HKCEE (O Level) results, particularly
those who have failed their writing, speaking and listening papers.
In semester
two, intake is partly based on recommendations made by students' regular
English teachers. Recommendations are made through referral forms which indicate
in which areas the students are particularly weak. Some students are volunteers
who join this programme in groups or individually by registering at the CILL counter
during the semester break in December.
Student Self-Assessment and Teacher
Feedback
During this 22-hour programme, students can expect to complete
approximately three modules. As they complete their first module (about 6-8 hours
into the programme), they are able to record their progress and receive teacher
feedback. In addition to the teacher feedback given formally at the end of each
objective, immediate feedback is a regular feature of the Supplementary English
Programme teaching due to its small-group structure.
