one or two piece clothing for women and girls. Types: A-line - no waistline, flares from upper body to hem. Asymmetric - with off-centre closure or design elements. Bubble - having bubble or pouf skirt, the fullness of the skirt is attached to a less full lining giving the impression of a bubble. Caftan - see above Chemise - see above Cheongsam - see above Coat - single or double breasted notch collar dress with coat-like appearance. Sometimes belted. Empire - dress with high waist seam just under the bust with a straight, gathered or flared skirt. Jumper - one-piece sleeveless dress with lower neckline worn with blouse or sweater. Peasant - gathered round neckline, full bodice and full gathered skirt; sometimes with hem ruffles and full puffed sleeves. Pinafore - bib top dress with shoulder ruffle and full gathered skirt. Worn with a blouse. Sheath - simple straight dress which is fitted slightly at the waist using vertical darts. Shirtwaist - basically an elongated, tailored shirt with centre button closure. Smock - gathered fabric of the skirt is attached to a top yoke (separate, shaped piece). Often used as a maternity dress. Sweater - elongated sweater worn as one-piece dress. Tent - triangular shaped dress flaring from narrow shoulders. Trumpet - has wide circular flounce at bottom of skirt so that it looks like the mouth of a trumpet. Tulip - slim dress with a wrapped skirt looking like a tulip before the flower fully opens. Tunic - long plain sleeve or sleeveless top worn over a skirt to give a dress effect. Originally a knee length garment worn by men and women. Wrap - a robe-like dress with full frontal opening that is wrapped around the body and secured with belt or sash. |
