How this module can help you

This module can help you by giving you the chance to consolidate and extend your understanding of the use, form and meaning of English grammar. This is done in a way which is designed to encourage you to discover the patterns of language structure and enhance your ability to apply rules independently. You will also gain insight into your English grammar strengths and weaknesses. As a result your English will grow in its sophistication and complexity.

Level

This is a level B module mainly intended for second- and third-year students who want to enhance their English proficiency in areas of need or interest. The main aim of these modules is to help students to develop more sophisticated communication skills in the language. Level B modules are pitched at intermediate to upper-intermediate levels.

Objectives

This module aims to help students develop the language and skills needed

  • to review the essential parts of speech and elements of sentence composition.
  • to use conceptual skills and learning strategies required to question, explain and analyze the use of voice, conditionality, cohesion and use of certain parts of speech.
  • to address some of the most common grammatical difficulties that students face.
  • to utilize structure (discovery), orientation (error analysis) and pattern (text analysis) to enhance students’ awareness of and create an autonomous interest in grammar.
  • to create a dynamic and interactive environment to stimulate students.
  • to provide support activities and materials within a disciplined framework.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the module, students are expected to be able to use the language and skills needed to

  • develop a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental meta-language of grammar.
  • independently identify the function and use of voice, conditionality, cohesion and use of certain parts of speech through analyzing, concept checking and comparing them in context.
  • learn strategies to record and develop their grammatical accuracy and awareness through a number of innovative learning strategies and skills.
  • analyze some of the most common grammatical errors and learn to avoid them.

Classroom instruction

In the classroom component of this module you are expected to complete 11 units of work on various aspects of grammar. The topics covered in these units are as follows.

Course review, study advice

To maximise the value of the classroom component, please make sure that you attend class regularly and punctually, and that you participate fully in the activities.

Web-based exercises

You are expected to spend around 5 hours on web-based exercises (i.e. about 30 minutes per week). These exercises will be closely connected to the activities covered in class and will give you the opportunity to consolidate and extend your knowledge and skills.

Independent learning

You are expected to do at least 3 hours of independent learning in the Centre for Independent Language Learning (CILL). Your work in the CILL should be related to the topic of the module (i.e. activities on future tenses).

Assessment

To complete this module satisfactorily you will need to

  • do three in-class tests
  • fulfil the web requirements
  • attend class regularly and punctually (NB At least 18 hours )
