How this module can help you

This module can help you by giving you the chance to develop your understanding of the use, form and meaning of English grammar. This is done in a way which is designed to encourage you to discover and apply rules independently and to analyse your own strengths and weaknesses.

Level

This is a Level A module mainly intended for first-year students who have a weak foundation in a particular area of English (e.g. they have performed poorly in any of the papers in the Use of English)". The main aim of these modules is to help students to build a sound foundation in their areas of weakness. Level A modules are pitched at lower-intermediate to intermediate levels.

Objectives

This module aims to help students develop the language and skills needed to

  • comprehend the essential parts of speech and elements of sentence composition
  • use conceptual skills and learning strategies required to question, explain and analyse the use of tense, aspect and modality
  • address some of the most common grammatical difficulties that students face
  • utilise structure (discovery), orientation (error analysis) and pattern (text analysis) to enhance students' awareness of and create an autonomous interest in grammar

Learning outcomes

At the end of the module, students are expected to be able to use the language and skills needed to

  • develop a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental meta-language of grammar
  • independently identify the function and use of time, aspect and modality through analysing, concept checking and comparing them in context
  • learn strategies to record and develop their grammatical accuracy and awareness through a number of innovative learning strategies and skills
  • analyse some of the most common grammatical errors and learn to avoid them
