How this module can help you

This module can help you by giving you the chance to develop the skills needed to plan, organise and deliver effective presentations. Our research shows that oral presentations are the most important activity at the PolyU. Many students find that giving an oral presentation in English is a difficult and stressful experience. This is entirely understandable: not only do you have to understand and organise a range of information and ideas, but you also have to present this material in a second language. This module is designed to help you overcome some of the problems that you may encounter when giving presentations.

Level

This is a Level A module mainly intended for first-year students who have a weak foundation in a particular area of English (e.g. they have performed poorly in any of the papers in the Use of English)". The main aim of these modules is to help students to build a sound foundation in their areas of weakness. Level A modules are pitched at lower-intermediate to intermediate levels.

Objectives

This module aims to help students develop the language and skills needed to plan, organise and deliver effective oral presentations in academic and professional contexts.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this module, students are expected to be able to use the language and skills needed to

  • communicate their ideas confidently, fluently and appropriately
  • plan a presentation, taking into account its topic, purpose and audience
  • organise information and ideas effectively by sequencing (introduction - body - conclusion) and signposting
  • deliver a presentation effectively by employing appropriate verbal language (e.g. register) and non-verbal language (e.g. gestures)

Web-based exercises

You are expected to spend around 5 hours on web-based exercises (i.e. about 30 minutes per week). These exercises will be closely connected to the activities covered in class and will give you the opportunity to consolidate and extend your knowledge and skills. They will also allow you to self-assess your progress as you work through the module.

Independent learning

You are expected to do at least 3 hours of independent learning in the Centre for Independent Language Learning (CILL). Your work in the CILL will involve planning, rehearsing and filming a presentation.

Assessment

To complete this module satisfactorily you will need to

  • do two presentation assignments
  • fulfil the web and ePortfolio requirements
  • attend class regularly and punctually (NB At least 18 hours )
