How this module can help you

This module will help you improve your English pronunciation and speaking skills. This will enable you to express yourself more clearly in presentations and seminars at university and in interviews and meetings in the workplace.

Level

This is a Level B module mainly intended for students who have completed ELEP-SPEAK1:Pronunciation A. Level B modules are mainly intended for second- and third-year students who want to enhance their English proficiency in areas of need or interest. The main aim of these modules is to help students to develop more sophisticated communication skills in the language. Level B modules are pitched at intermediate to upper-intermediate levels.

Objectives

This module aims to help students improve their English pronunciation.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the module, students are expected to be able to

  • learn pronunciation independently
  • read words or phrases with appropriate stress
  • say sentences with appropriate pauses, linking and intonation

Modes of learning

This module involves 30 hours of learning in two modes:

Classroom instruction

In this component of this module you are expected to complete 7 units of work on various pronunciation and speaking skills. The lessons will be conducted in one of the multi-media labs in the CILL with both teacher-led lessons and computer-based learning tasks. 

To maximise the value of the teacher-led sessions, please make sure that you attend class regularly and punctually, and that you participate fully in both the face-to face and web-based weekly activities.

Independent study: Web-based learning tasks

You are expected to spend around 2 hours a week on independent study and computer-based tasks.

Assessment

To complete this module satisfactorily you will need to

  • take the in-class assessment
  • fulfil the computer-based requirements
  • attend class regularly and punctually (NB At least 18 hours )
