How this module can help you

This module will help you improve your English pronunciation and speaking skills. This will enable you to express yourself more clearly in presentations and seminars at university and in interviews and meetings in the workplace.

Level

This is a Level A module mainly intended for first-year students who have a weak foundation in a particular area of English (e.g. they have performed poorly in any of the papers in the Use of English)". The main aim of these modules is to help students to build a sound foundation in their areas of weakness. Level A modules are pitched at lower-intermediate to intermediate levels.

Objectives

This module aims to help students improve their English pronunciation.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the module, students are expected to be able to

  • learn pronunciation independently
  • recognise the IPA symbols and their frequently associated spelling patterns
  • understand the relationship between sound and spelling patterns in word pronunciation
  • differentiate the 44 phoneme sounds of English
  • count the number of syllables in sounding words and phrases
  • read words or phrases with appropriate stress

Modes of learning

This module involves 30 hours of learning in two modes:

In this component of this module you are expected to complete 11 units of work on various word pronunciation and speaking skills. The lessons will be conducted in one of the multi-media labs in the CILL with both teacher-led lessons and web-based learning tasks. The topics covered in these units are as follows.

To maximise the value of the teacher-led sessions, please make sure that you attend class regularly and punctually, and that you participate fully in both the face-to face and web-based weekly activities.

 

Assessment

To complete this module satisfactorily you will need to

  • fulfil the web requirements
