How this module can help you

Vocabulary Building A helped prepare you for your university assignments, projects and presentations. We focused on such areas as word formation, dictionary skills and strategies to record and recall words. Vocabulary Building B extends the basic vocabulary covered in Vocabulary Building A and helps you to achieve a more sophisticated command of vocabulary in professional and business English as well as academic English.

Level

This is a level B module mainly intended for second- and third-year students who want to enhance their English proficiency in areas of need or interest. The main aim of these modules is to help students to develop more sophisticated communication skills in the language. Level B modules are pitched at intermediate to upper-intermediate levels.

Objectives

This module aims to build up both your receptive and active vocabulary by introducing various aspects including register, formality, style and collocation with a focus on professional and business English as well as academic English. This module will help you to express yourself in a more sophisticated way.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the module, students are expected to be able to

  • apply strategies for recording / recalling words more effectively
  • utilise more effectively a dictionary, thesaurus and concordancer
  • expand their knowledge of register, style and collocation
  • familiarise themselves with professional, business and academic words

Classroom instruction

In the classroom component of this module, you are expected to complete 7 units of work on various aspects of vocabulary development. The topics covered in these units are as follows.

To maximise the value of the classroom component, please make sure that you attend class regularly and punctually, and that you participate fully in the activities.

Web-based exercises

You are expected to spend around 10 hours on web-based tasks (i.e. about 1 hour and 30 minutes per week). These exercises will be closely connected to the activities covered in class and will give you the opportunity to consolidate and extend your knowledge and skills.

Independent learning

You are expected to do at least 6 hours of independent learning in the Centre for Independent Language Learning (CILL). Your work in the CILL should be related to vocabulary development.

Assessment

To complete this module satisfactorily you will need to

  • take two in-class quizzes
  • fulfil the web requirements
  • attend class regularly and punctually (NB At least 12 hours )
