How this module can help you

This module can help you by providing you with the chance to build up your vocabulary and apply the strategies needed to record and recall words. This will help you to reach a higher standard in your university assignments, projects and presentations. It will also help you with your professional English in the future. Research shows that students often consider themselves rather weak in expressing their ideas in both written and spoken communication at university and, especially, in understanding specialist vocabulary and working out the meaning of academic words. This module is designed to help you overcome some of the problems that you may encounter when studying at this university.

Level

This is a Level A module mainly intended for first-year students who have a weak foundation in a particular area of English (e.g. they have performed poorly in any of the papers in the Use of English)". The main aim of these modules is to help students to build a sound foundation in their areas of weakness. Level A modules are pitched at lower-intermediate to intermediate levels.

Objectives

This module aims to build up both your receptive and active vocabulary by introducing various vocabulary storing and recalling techniques and by analysing the internal structure of words so that you can express yourself in a more sophisticated way.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the module, students are expected to be able to

  • discover and apply strategies for recording / recalling words
  • utilise a dictionary, thesaurus and concordancer more effectively
  • infer meaning by analysing the internal structure of words

  • familiarise themselves with academic words and functions
