Level

This is a level B module mainly intended for students who want to enhance their English proficiency in areas of need or interest. The main aim of these modules is to help students to develop more sophisticated communication skills in the language. Level B modules are pitched at intermediate to upper-intermediate levels.

Objectives

At the end of the module, students are expected to be able to use the language and skills needed to:

  • understand the issues in the news and the language used to express editorial views
  • critically assess and react to issues
  • express own views in discussion, debate & writing

Modes of learning

The module involves 30 hours of learning in three modes:

Classroom instruction

In the classroom component of this module, you are expected to complete 7 units of work on various aspects of the news and current events.This will include reading, listening to and discussing current news and writing newspaper style articles.

Web-based exercises

You are expected to spend around 10 hours on web-based work (i.e. about 1 hour and 30 minutes per week). This will include reading newspapers and listening to radio news.

Independent learning

You are expected to do at least 6 hours of independent learning in the Centre for Independent Language Learning (CILL). Your work in the CILL should be related to the topic of the module (i.e. listening and speaking skills).

Assessment

To complete this module satisfactorily you will need to

  • write a newspaper article in an appropriate journalistic style
  • prepare a video news broadcast of current events
  • attend class regularly and punctually (at least 12 hours)
