How this module can help you

Our research tells us that many PolyU students, particularly those in their first year, find it difficult to understand English-medium lectures and talks in their subject areas. Many students also find it difficult to communicate their ideas confidently and fluently in English in seminars and tutorials. This module can help you by giving you the chance to develop the English-language skills needed to listen effectively to lectures and participate actively in academic discussions at university.

Level

This is a Level A module mainly intended for first-year students who have a weak foundation in a particular area of English (e.g. they have performed poorly in any of the papers in the Use of English)". The main aim of these modules is to help students to build a sound foundation in their areas of weakness. Level A modules are pitched at lower-intermediate to intermediate levels.

Objectives

This module aims to help students develop the language and skills needed to listen to lectures and participate in seminar discussions.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the module, students are expected to be able to use the language and skills needed to

  • understand the content and structure of English-medium lectures and talks
  • present and discuss information and ideas in small-group settings
