Background

The Introductory Module is designed for Degree and Higher Diploma students who, on the basis of their Use of English or HKCEE results, have been identified as requiring additional English-language support.

Objectives

The primary objectives of the Introductory Module are to

  • activate students' English-language communication and examination skills, focusing on accuracy and fluency
  • increase students' motivation and confidence in the learning process through active participation in the classroom activities

Modes of learning

The module lasts 22 hours (11 2-hour sessions) and is taught in groups of 4 or 5. Students can expect to complete 3-4 units of work. As they complete their first unit (after about 6-8 hours of learning), they are able to record their progress and receive teacher feedback. In addition to the teacher feedback given formally at the end of each objective, immediate feedback is a regular feature of the module due to its small-group structure.

There are no assignments, tests or exams. The module content is based primarily on the English-language needs and interests of the group. Group members, in consultation with their teacher, negotiate among themselves and choose approximately three areas of English at the beginning of the module. The following are some of the commonly chosen modules:

  • Report writing
  • Oral presentations
  • Pronunciation
  • Discussion skills
  • Grammar in writing
  • Vocabulary building
  • Listening practice
  • Job interviews

End of module report

At the end of the module, a short report on your progress will be sent to you and your programme leader.
